About The Position

The Mathematics Instructional Coach at Washoe County School District plays a pivotal role in enhancing the instructional capabilities of teachers in middle school mathematics. Reporting directly to the Middle School Principal, the coach is responsible for strengthening teacher capacity in alignment with the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS). This includes providing guidance on instructional strategies, educational research, lesson design, and the implementation of aligned texts and materials. The coach will also engage in lesson critique and coaching, ensuring that high-quality instruction is delivered to students. The position entails a teaching load of approximately 0.5, with the remaining time dedicated to coaching responsibilities. In addition to core professional development, the Mathematics Instructional Coach serves as a vital resource for teachers, offering expertise in standard-based lesson planning and the development of classroom-based formative assessments. The coach will model lessons, observe teaching practices, and provide constructive feedback to enhance instructional effectiveness. Furthermore, the coach may assist teachers in implementing intervention strategies and differentiated instruction tailored to meet diverse student needs. The role also involves supporting Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) by modeling collaborative structures, providing professional resources, and assisting in the design of interventions. The coach will play a key role in data analysis, helping to collate and analyze data for instructional decision-making within PLCs. As an instructional strategist, the coach will train and model effective research-based teaching strategies, fostering reflective practices that lead to increased student engagement and achievement. Moreover, the Mathematics Instructional Coach will participate in school improvement initiatives, serving on leadership councils and contributing to the design and implementation of school improvement plans. Continuous professional development is essential, and all instructional coaches are expected to engage in ongoing training to refine their coaching skills. Collaboration with Curriculum & Instruction Specialists is also a critical aspect of the role, ensuring effective implementation of the NVACS across the curriculum.
