The primary function of this position is to assist the classroom teacher in the achievement of curriculum objectives by working with individual students and/or small groups. Clerical and other duties necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the classroom will be assigned as necessary by the individual classroom teacher and/or building principal. The paraprofessional must be able to move, bend, squat, and kneel while assisting children.

  • Administers, scores, and records such achievement and diagnostic tests, not pertaining to State Assessments, as the teacher recommends for individual students.
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the classroom teacher and all appropriate special subject teachers.
  • Assists the teacher in developing and implementing strategies for the reinforcement of materials or skills to meet the individual needs of the student.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work as assigned by the teacher.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and make-up work as assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists with such large group work activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling, as assigned by the teacher.
  • Alerts the classroom teacher to any and all problems of special information regarding individual students.
  • Serves as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information as is expected of all school personnel.
  • Participates in the in-service training and faculty meetings as assigned.
  • Attends parent/teacher conferences when assigned by the principal.
  • Addresses specific students' needs; such as assisting students in dressing, escorting students to the bathroom, providing basic assistance to students to include diapering and other related safety and cleanliness activities.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, the Superintendent of Schools or his designee.
  • Must have a minimum of 48 college credits or a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent may find acceptable and appropriate.
  • PORTUGUESE AND/OR SPANISH SPEAKING PREFERRED.
