About The Position

North Marion School District is seeking a dedicated Instructional Assistant – Self-Contained Classroom to support students with significant cognitive, developmental, physical, and/or behavioral needs. This position provides academic instruction, behavioral support, and personal care assistance in a self-contained special education setting. Instructional Assistants work closely with licensed teachers, specialists, and support staff to ensure a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student independence and growth. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (college coursework, Associate’s Degree, or paraprofessional assessment preferred)
  • Must meet federal and state paraprofessional requirements, if applicable
  • Successful background and criminal history clearance
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and meet physical demands of the position
  • Willingness to learn and apply instructional, behavioral, and de-escalation strategies
  • Ability to assist with personal care and support students during behavioral crises
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Support students with individualized instruction aligned to IEP goals
  • Assist with accommodations, modifications, and communication strategies
  • Provide personal care assistance (e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene, mobility) as required
  • Implement behavioral intervention plans and positive behavior supports
  • Use trained de-escalation and crisis intervention strategies when needed
  • Support students with adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and communication devices
  • Supervise students across school settings to ensure safety and engagement
  • Collect and share student progress data with teachers and specialists
  • Prepare and adapt instructional materials under teacher direction
  • Maintain confidentiality and accurate student records
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and professional development
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
