About The Position

Special Education Instructional Assistants support students with disabilities by assisting certified special education teachers in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role involves providing instructional support, behavior management, and personal care services to ensure academic and social success in inclusive and specialized settings. Special Education Instructional Assistants report to and are supported by the District Special Education Manager, who provides leadership in all areas of special education programming. In collaboration with the School Principal, the Manager also supports the consistent implementation of attendance and behavioral procedures.

Requirements

  • Education: Associate’s degree; at least two years (60 hours) of higher education; or have passed the ParaPro Assessment required.
  • Licenses: Certified Teaching Assistant (CTA) preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with young children in a special educational setting preferred.
  • Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and child maltreatment registry checks.
  • Complete the ADE Special Education Paraprofessional Training Modules within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ongoing participation in professional development activities as required by ADE.
  • Strong knowledge in core academic subjects; proficiency in integrating technology into instruction.
  • Understanding of child development and instructional strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift and move students as required; stamina to assist students throughout the day.
  • Comfortable assisting with direct care tasks as needed.
  • Capability to respond quickly to emergencies.

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in delivering instructional activities under the supervision of certified teachers.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to reinforce learning objectives.
  • Prepare and adapt classroom and instructional materials, displays, and activities to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans as directed; monitor and document student behavior and progress.
  • Promote positive social interactions among students to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
  • Assist students with personal care tasks, including feeding, toileting, and mobility.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and team discussions as appropriate; communicate effectively with teachers, therapists, and families regarding student progress.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information per school policies and legal requirements.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by school and district leaders.
