About The Position

The Instructional Assistant (Paraprofessional) Substitute works for 5.75 hours per day at an hourly rate of $14.00. The role involves assisting teachers and other professionals in providing special education and related services to pupils with disabilities. The educational assistant will support the teacher in supervising pupils, assisting with instructional tasks, and performing duties that do not require a teaching certificate or license. The position is under the supervision of the teacher assigned, the Building Principal, and/or the Director of Pupil Services.

Requirements

  • Educational Aide Permit or Paraprofessional License.
  • High School Diploma with postsecondary training/education in working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students and associates.
  • Ability to efficiently operate standard office equipment.
  • Good health, high moral character, and a good attendance record.
  • Ability to lift at least 60 lbs.
  • Willingness to attend any provided training.
  • Must pass the required Educational Assistant Examination.

  • Knowledge of personal hygiene and health care procedures related to pupils with disabilities.
  • Willingness to learn about the disabilities affecting the pupils served.
  • Ability to read and understand a pupil's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA '97) and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the provision of special education and related services for pupils with disabilities as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with instructional tasks and classroom activities.
  • Implement practices and services designated by related services personnel for special education.
  • Assist pupils with disabilities during transition times and with health care and personal hygiene needs.
  • Participate in parent conferences and staff meetings regarding the welfare of pupils with disabilities.
