About The Position

Assist teaching staff in the Teacher’s performance of instructional, monitoring, and/or clerical duties associated with the classroom or vocational education and behavioral support of students. Support the Teacher to achieve the overall goal of providing for each student a program reflecting educational excellence and equality. With BA degree may serve as substitute teacher in the absence of the certified teacher.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High School Diploma.
  • Experience in working with children.
  • Must obtain and maintain certification in TCI by passing a written test annually and physical skills assessment every 6 months.
  • Maintain a Connecticut or other home state Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree preferred.
  • Bachelors degree required for classroom substitute teaching function.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in creating and supporting a positive learning environment that is responsive to and respectful of the learning needs of all students.
  • Assist effectively managing routines and transitions.
  • Assist the teacher in organizing space, materials, and equipment for instruction.
  • Assist the teacher in establishing and maintaining classroom rules and expectations.
  • Assist the teacher in preparation of materials for instruction.
  • Reinforce previously taught concepts to students according to the teacher’s lesson plans. Assist students individually and in groups with lesson assignments.
  • Function as a substitute for Education staff as directed by the Director of Education (BA level aides only).
  • Maintain effective communication with students and colleagues.
  • Provide support for students through verbal and non-verbal communication, and help students develop positive self-concepts.
  • Assist in crisis management/support as directed by a Shift Supervisor and or Administrator.
  • Attend all scheduled Education Department staff meetings, staff development, and trainings.
  • Practice within the CARE and TCI models supporting the therapeutic milieu at Waterford Country School for clients, Agency staff, volunteers and stakeholders.
  • Must obtain and maintain certification in TCI by passing a written test annually and physical skills assessment every 6 months.
  • Uphold and model for our students the agency’s Health and Wellness model.
  • Maintain knowledge of and follow Agency policies and procedures as contained in the WCS Personnel Handbook, WCS Procedure Manual, and departmental manuals.
  • Maintain an awareness of and sensitivity to the cultural and socioeconomic differences present among the service population and fellow staff members of WCS, ensuring that cultural needs are respected and supported through the delivery of services and the development and implementation of agency programs and policies in a manner that is free from discrimination and bias relating to race, ethnicity, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, status as a victim of domestic violence or religious beliefs.
  • Function as a positive role model for all students and staff at the Waterford Country School.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and carry out other projects and responsibilities as requested by the Director of Education.
  • Maintain a Connecticut or other home state Driver’s License.
  • Assist in the supervision of students during the morning routine in the cottages, ensuring the smooth transition of students to the school day.
  • Identified as an essential staff member.
