About the position

The position involves assisting and training students in the maintenance of their personal needs, which includes feeding, combing hair, and dressing appropriately. The role requires providing physical assistance to students who cannot care for themselves, including feeding, diapering, turning, and physical movement. Additionally, the position entails preparing students for mainstreamed classes according to established procedures and providing instruction/assistance to severely handicapped students in social, self-help, and community skills. The individual will also assist students on and off the bus, push wheelchairs, and lift students as needed. Tutoring individual or small groups of severely handicapped students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher, and monitoring and overseeing student drills, practices, and related activities are also part of the responsibilities. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and train students in the maintenance of personal needs including feeding, combing hair, and dressing appropriately.
  • Provide physical assistance to students who cannot care for themselves, including feeding, diapering, turning, and physical movement.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene; wash hands and faces; toilet students and change diapers and clothing as needed.
  • Prepare students for mainstreamed classes according to established procedures.
  • Provide instruction/assistance to severely handicapped students in social, self-help, and community skills.
  • Assist students on and off the bus; push wheelchairs and lift students as needed.
  • Tutor individual or small groups of severely handicapped students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and related activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate from high school or equivalent; 48 units of college level coursework; AA Degree or Certificate of Completion for NCLB requirements.
  • Ability to read, write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the assigned duties.
  • Ability to communicate with and effectively supervise students.
  • Ability to accept directions and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain a cooperative working relationship with others.
