About The Position

Assume responsibilities for tasks under the direct supervision of a certified teacher with a high degree of independent judgment, releasing the teacher from routine tasks periodically. Assist with instructional support and classroom management for individual and small groups of students. Interact with immediate supervisor, teacher, and parents, as appropriate. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies procedures and regulations.

Requirements

High school diploma/GED or higher
Forty-eight (48) hours from an accredited college or university
Have experience working with students and parents.
Must possess or be eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) AND must obtain a national criminal background check through the SBEC website within 30 days of hire.
Must be able to communicate, listen, read, write, and comprehend the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in daily communication.
Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with district employees, parents and students.
Must be able to assist in the lifting/ carrying of students with disabilities in excess of 50 to 175 lbs. depending on age level, pushing/pulling wheelchair/walker, personal hygiene, etc.
Must possess ability, skill, patience and understanding to work with students who have disabilities.
Requires some bending, reaching, standing, kneeling, squatting.
Must be able to acquire certification in CPR and Heimlich maneuver, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI).
Must be familiar with/able to use OT/PT apparatus.
Subject to the district's drug and alcohol screening policy and regulation.

Responsibilities

Provide instructional support to the classroom teacher; assist with record keeping, preparation and development of instructional materials, and bulletin board displays; provide coverage for the classroom during teacher meetings.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
Assist students with severe developmental and communication delays, lack of social interaction and behavioral concerns to implement modifications and master individual instructional goals.
Maintain confidentiality of student information and maintain attendance, behavioral, logs, and document student progress.
Assist teacher with integrating technology and educational media into the curriculum.
Restrain or help a student whose behavior is dangerous to him/herself and/or others. In no case, should the assistant's physical intervention extend beyond that of restraint.
Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
Operate a variety of classroom instructional equipment, including but not limited to computers, audiovisual equipment, and video equipment. Assist with inventory and maintenance of equipment.
Work cooperatively with the classroom teacher; monitor student behaviors and safety; incorporate behavioral strategies, personal care, and social skills development on a daily basis.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
Assist in the creation and actively participate in a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular school business hours to confer with district stakeholders as needed.
Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
