The position involves assisting and training students in the maintenance of their personal needs, which includes feeding, combing hair, and dressing appropriately. The role requires providing physical assistance to students who cannot care for themselves, including feeding, diapering, turning, and physical movement. Additionally, the position entails preparing students for mainstreamed classes according to established procedures and providing instruction/assistance to severely handicapped students in social, self-help, and community skills. The individual will assist students on and off the bus, push wheelchairs, and lift students as needed. Tutoring individual or small groups of severely handicapped students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher, and monitoring and overseeing student drills, practices, and related activities are also key responsibilities. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.
