This level Inspector is responsible for very specialized inspection, investigation and enforcement in one of the specialized functions: Signal Construction and Code Specialist. Inspects very complex projects. May be unable to seek advice on difficult technical problems from a supervisor. The Inspector III works independently and is responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment, and familiarity with specialized problems where the inspector may be the City’s final technical authority.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Four (4) years of experience inspecting the design/construction/maintenance of streets, storm drainage systems, water/sewer mains, water/wastewater facilities and/or bridge improvements projects.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector Certification is required within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree (or higher) in any field plus three (3) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and performs a wide range of inspections on various City properties and projects to determine compliance with safety, structural, zoning, plans, and/or applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Identifies, researches, and investigates alleged violations of federal, state, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Issues and drafts notices of violation and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections are made.
  • Performs complex inspections for complex construction projects, signal construction, zoning, environmental, housing, park facilities, and other complex projects.
  • Interprets and enforces the zoning regulations in Conservation and Historic Districts as well as Planned Developments.
  • Provides information to customers regarding codes and other regulatory requirements.
  • Examines construction work performed by outside contractors and city personnel to enforce compliance with contract specifications.
  • Inspects work performed at construction sites and/or reviews construction plans for compliance with building, electrical plumbing mechanical zoning, barricade/sign codes and regulations.
  • Patrols assigned area periodically to ensure that construction sites have the proper permits for the work being performed.
  • Keeps abreast of new materials used in construction, new repair scams, and changes in relevant codes and ordinances.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
