About The Position

The Inspector I will report on project progress and work to keep projects on schedule, within budget, and maintain the scope of the project. The incumbent will have extensive interaction with construction managers, contractors, and other project or job site team members.

Requirements

  • Ability to use GPS, digital camera equipment, and read maps.
  • Some knowledge of construction materials, procedures, methods, and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of inspection and progress evaluation techniques and use of equipment and procedures for testing materials.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand contract specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, contractors, outside agencies and the general public.
  • High school diploma, or diploma from and accredited vocational school, or General Educational Development (GED) certificate or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience inspecting water, sewer, roadway, or other related construction projects.
  • The employee must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment. A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
  • The employee must have permanent residency in Allegheny County at time of appointment and remain a permanent resident throughout employment with the Pittsburgh Water.

Nice To Haves

  • Some knowledge of City of Pittsburgh’s geography is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect maintenance work to determine whether it adheres to requirements established in contract documents, including plans and specifications.
  • Scout and inspect Catch Basins and Inlets to make sure they are clean and flowing properly; create work orders for those needing to be cleaned and/or replaced.
  • Coordinate and work with contractors to clean Catch Basins and Inlets, calculate the amount of debris removed.
  • Use an iPad to properly document work completed and track progress.
  • Support Engineering Department with managing and coordinating the materials, equipment, and personnel toward the effective and economical attainment of program goals, including maximum convenience to the public and safety of employees.
  • Observe, monitor, and prepare daily reports of asset project site activities and cleaning activity.
  • Maintain daily project logs and photos covering such items as quantities and materials used, assets cleaned, and reporting any asset that may be defective, faulty, broken, and/or damaged.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly calculations of work completed and final reports.
  • Review contractor quality and workmanship, report issues or completed projects through proper channels.
  • Report on any problems or issues encountered in the performance of work.
  • Manage feedback, including complaints from, or conflicts with, contractors or the general public.
  • Inform the contractors when a discrepancy between contract, plan, specification, and installed work is identified. They must also document the discrepancy.
  • Coordinate with appropriate personnel in other departments when projects impact various operations, like water shut offs by Field Operations Team.
  • Record asset conditions and various measurements of completed work.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned or required.
