About The Position

This position is responsible for directing and coordinating the operations of the Office of the Inspector General, which is responsible for conducting both procedural and criminal investigations under the authority of the director, fugitive apprehensions, intelligence unit, the department’s law enforcement telecommunication operations, administrative security detail, the oversight of federal standards outlined within the Prison Rape Elimination Act, and serves as the department’s primary liaison to both outside law enforcement agencies and the Department of State Emergency Operations.

Requirements

• Knowledge of modern correctional operational and administrative practice; of investigative techniques; of Oklahoma law as it pertains to crime, search and seizure, arrest and rules of evidence; of public relations as they pertain to investigative activities; and of the principles and practices of administration including supervision/management.
• Knowledge of and skill in the use and application of appropriate information technology.
• Ability to plan, direct and coordinate the activities of others; to interpret, analyze and resolve complex problems; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; and to organize and manage several projects simultaneously.
• Bachelor’s degree and ten years of experience in a correctional/security or law enforcement capacity, including five years in a supervisory capacity, and CLEET peace officer certification; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Applicants must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at the time of appointment and retain a valid driver’s license throughout appointment; possess the ability and willingness to carry a firearm and use deadly force as a required; have and maintain physical and mental stamina to perform the work, as evidenced by a complete physical examination that meets the specifications of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections; possess a willingness to accept the physical discomforts and/or dangers inherent in the work; be willing to relocate to the place of assignment anywhere in the state; be willing to be on call twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven days a week; be willing to travel frequently and be away from home for extended periods; and must pass a rigid character and background investigation.

• Fugitive Apprehension Agents shall meet the training and screening requirements conducted by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training within twelve (12) months of employment. (57 O.S. 510)
• No person who has been convicted of a nonviolent felony or crime involving moral turpitude and who has not received a full pardon from the proper authority, or who has been convicted of any other felony offense, is eligible for employment in this job classification. (70 O.S. 3311.E and 21 O.S. 1283.B)
• No person who has received a verdict of guilty or pled guilty or nolo contendere to any offense required to register pursuant to the Sex Offender Registration Act is eligible for employment in this job classification. (57 O.S. 589.C)
• No person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, who has not been pardoned for, or had the conviction expunged or set aside; or is subject to a court order that restrains the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or the partner’s child or engaging in other conduct that would place an intimate partner or the partner’s child in reasonable fear of bodily injury and includes a finding that the person is a credible threat; or who has been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the armed services is eligible for employment in this job classification. Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree and ten years of experience in a division specializing in internal affairs, investigations or intelligence, and CLEET peace officer certification.
• Completion of Task Force Commander Certification through Federal Bureau of Justice and Oklahoma Chiefs of Police, Oklahoma Sheriff training, or equivalent law enforcement officer certification or training.

Responsibilities

• Directs a wide range of administrative and criminal investigations which encompass matters concerning offenders, employees and other identified criminal activity that may impact correctional operations.
• Responsible for the operations of the department’s fugitive apprehension unit, which is dedicated to the apprehension of departmental escapees and absconders statewide.
• Responsible for all interstate transportation of offenders returning to the department and/or being housed in other states.
• Supervises and coordinates the operations of the security staff assigned to the department’s administrative office and provides oversight for the security operations of the agency.
• Serves as the department’s primary liaison to both outside law enforcement agencies and the Department of State Emergency Operations.
• May be responsible for carrying out security drills and making reports/ recommendations concerning security of facilities to determine conformity and compliance with security regulations and safety precautions.
