The Inspector Code Enforcement position within the Development Services department is responsible for enforcing city codes and zoning ordinances through inspections of residential buildings. The role involves identifying safety hazards, overseeing remedial actions, and ensuring compliance with housing codes. The inspector also prepares demolition orders, maintains records, and responds to citizen complaints regarding violations.

  • Perform inspections to enforce city codes and zoning ordinances.
  • Inspect existing residential buildings for structural and safety hazards.
  • Cite corrections needed for compliance with city housing codes.
  • Oversee and check remedial actions and recommend changes as necessary.
  • Condemn unsafe structures and notify tenants to vacate.
  • Assist tenants in relocation to public housing when necessary.
  • Prepare demolition orders and provide evidence for Municipal Court.
  • Direct demolition of condemned structures as ordered by Municipal Court.
  • Maintain and update records of actions taken and related activities.
  • Prepare and send written reports and correspondence to property owners.
  • Interpret and explain building and zoning ordinances to the public.
  • Coordinate commercial inspections with city staff inspectors.
  • Submit inspection results to property owners and notify of actions to be taken.
  • Respond to citizen complaints and conduct field investigations.
  • Notify the Police department for enforcement of related activities.
  • Contact responsible persons for violations and issue notices to correct problems.
  • Perform limited Title searches to locate property owners as needed.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure required improvements are made.
  • Enforce city sign ordinances and issue citations as necessary.
  • Provide records and testimony for Municipal Court and City Council hearings.
  • Stay updated with new housing and code enforcement regulations.
  • Assist in providing information for City Council regarding new ordinances.
  • Attend community and public meetings as needed.
  • Assist in training new employees.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5 years related code enforcement experience in housing and/or zoning code enforcement.
  • International Codes Congress (ICC) Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certifications required or must obtain within the working test period.
  • Valid Class C Georgia driver's license with satisfactory driving history.
  • Knowledge of approved methods and materials used in building construction.
  • Ability to use a PC and proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to enforce city and zoning codes firmly and impartially.
  • Thorough knowledge of Standard Housing Codes and zoning regulations.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend corrections for code violations.
  • Ability to perform limited Title searches to locate property owners.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
