Clean Harbors is seeking an InSite Compliance Technician to support a customer’s regulatory inspection and compliance programs at their facility. In this role, you will help develop, implement, and manage compliance audit programs (including hazardous and medical waste management and laboratory chemical hygiene), coordinate and perform inspections, and analyze results to drive continuous improvement. You will also train Compliance Specialists on inspection procedures and provide regulatory support to customer EHS and InSite leadership to help ensure safe, compliant operations and site continuity. Requirements

  • High school diploma plus specialized training or at least one year of college-level coursework.
  • 5–7 years of experience in environmental compliance, environmental services, industrial operations, or a related field.
  • Required certifications/licenses (or ability to obtain within specified timelines): 40-hour OSHA and 8-hour OSHA Refresher Federal RCRA DOT Title 22 – California only (if applicable) CMWMA – California only (if applicable)
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead and mentor paraprofessional staff in day-to-day inspection and compliance activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to build effective relationships with client EHS and operations.
  • Excellent working knowledge of federal and state regulations, including EPA regulations (RCRA, SARA/CERCLA) and DOT requirements.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based applications and standard business software.
  • Technical/manufacturing process knowledge and prior environmental services industry experience.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% as needed.

  • Experience supporting compliance programs in laboratory, manufacturing, or large industrial environments.
  • Prior experience with hazardous waste, medical waste, or chemical hygiene programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the InSite customer in developing, implementing, and managing a compliance audit program, including hazardous and medical waste management and laboratory chemical hygiene.
  • Train Compliance Specialists on all compliance inspection procedures for HWAA (Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area) inspections, laboratory inspections, utility area inspections, and hazardous waste tank and line inspections.
  • Conduct internal assessments of Compliance Specialists to confirm that inspection procedures are accurately followed and documented.
  • Set monthly inspection goals in conjunction with the InSite customer and Program Manager; coordinate and schedule weekly inspections and prioritize inspection workloads.
  • Provide regulatory support to customer EHS regarding hazardous waste management, waste tank management, offsite disposal, and reporting requirements.
  • Assess Clean Harbors InSite Operations onsite to identify issues of non-compliance, employee safety concerns, or efficiency gaps, and work with the InSite Program Manager and Clean Harbors H&S to implement corrective actions.
  • Analyze compliance inspection results to identify trends and make recommendations to the customer to drive continuous improvement.
  • Train InSite Services staff each month on RCRA, OSHA, and DOT modules; deliver additional training modules and presentations relevant to state (e.g., DTSC) requirements.
  • Interact with client representatives and regulatory agencies to communicate Clean Harbors InSite procedures and provide site knowledge and support during regulatory audits.
  • Prepare and maintain the client’s compliance documentation to ensure readiness for county or state inspections.
  • Assist the customer with special projects, make recommendations to meet client goals, and support evolving compliance needs.
  • Observe InSite personnel to verify that all internal Clean Harbors SOPs are being followed and assist in updating SOPs when procedures change.
  • Execute audits in laboratory and facility spaces to identify issues involving hazardous waste management, chemical hygiene, and laboratory safety.
  • Serve as a backup resource to the Program Manager and InSite Compliance Manager for InSite Services operations, providing additional support as needed.
  • Assist the Program Manager in identifying new opportunities for Clean Harbors to support the customer’s changing needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.
