About The Position

The Inpatient Medical Coder 2 position at The Ohio State University is responsible for coding inpatient medical records to facilitate reimbursement and data collection for the OSU Medical Center and The James Cancer Hospital. This role involves assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for diagnoses and procedures for all inpatients treated within the OSU Health System. The coder will review medical record abstract data for accuracy in EPIC/IHIS before completing the chart. The position requires coding various types of inpatient records and ensuring complete and accurate coding, as well as MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment for hospital reimbursement, research, and planning, in accordance with departmental productivity standards.

Requirements

• Minimum completion of a CAHIIM approved coding certificate program or HIMT program or equivalent education & experience.
• Demonstrated coding proficiency through satisfactory completion of OSUWMC's coding test.
• Familiarity or experience with Computer Assisted Coding and/or automated encoder.
• Credentialed as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by the American Health Information Management Association.
• Candidates hired from the Coding Apprenticeship Program must obtain one of the approved credentials within six months of hire.

Nice To Haves

• Minimum of two years' academic medicine inpatient coding experience.

Responsibilities

• Code inpatient medical records and other documents at the conclusion of the patient's visit.
• Select appropriate admitting diagnosis, principal and secondary diagnoses, and sequence diagnoses and procedures.
• Ensure codes flow from the Encoder Software to EPIC/IHIS Resolute Billing system.
• Maintain approved work schedule and adhere to productivity standards set for the department.
