The Inpatient Hospital Coder is responsible for accurately coding diagnoses and procedures from various hospital case types, including complex medical and surgical inpatient cases. This role requires effective use of hospital encoding systems and the ability to abstract and interpret data for hospital use. The position also involves training others and performing additional duties as assigned.

  • Collect relevant, accurate, and timely diagnosis and procedural codes from hospital case types.
  • Utilize hospital encoding systems effectively.
  • Recognize and abstract data for effective use throughout the hospital data cycle.
  • Train other staff members as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Associates Degree or two years of college coursework in Health Information Management (HIM) or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years hospital-based coding experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years hospital-based coding experience at Seattle Children's Hospital for internal applicants.
  • One of the following credentials is required: AHIMA - Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), AHIMA - Certified Coding Specialist- Physician (CCS-P), AAPC- Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), AAPC- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), AAPC - Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC).
