About The Position

The Injury Prevention Specialist is a full-time position with multiple duties and responsibilities. The position plans, implements, and evaluates a data-driven community based injury prevention program that aims to reduce the leading causes of injury morbidity and mortality in the Maniilaq Service Area. The position regularly plans, implements and evaluates training opportunities for injury prevention in the Maniilaq Service Area. This position reports directly to the manager of the Office of Environmental Health and is physically located at the Maniilaq Corporate Office in Kotzebue, Alaska.

Requirements

  • Injury Prevention Specialist I: High School diploma or GED equivalent. At least two years of college level education specializing in epidemiology, health education, environmental health or a related health field; or equivalent work experience in health education.
  • Injury Prevention Specialist II: Same as Injury Prevention Specialist I plus: BS in Epidemiology or related health field; or 4 years of study at an accredited college, which includes at least 30 semester hours in health education, epidemiology, environmental health or related science.
  • Self-motivated and able to work well on teams.
  • Understanding of the fundamental concepts of public health and epidemiology.
  • Willingness to verbally communicate with groups of people.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Frequent travel in small single-engine planes.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License and have a driving record that allows employee to be insured to drive Maniilaq Vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in community health initiatives.
  • Knowledge of injury prevention strategies.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and funding acquisition.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a severe injury surveillance system routinely collecting and analyzing data, disseminating results, and prioritizing injury prevention activities.
  • Establish an annual injury prevention plan with appropriate objectives, effective interventions, and evaluations to ensure continuous quality improvement of program activities.
  • Participates in community meetings, health fairs, school wellness initiatives, and other on-site injury prevention activities in all 12 Maniilaq Service Area communities.
  • Provide access to affordable injury prevention equipment and supplies by operating the injury prevention shop based in Kotzebue; and distributes affordable equipment and supplies to surrounding communities.
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships with local, regional, state and federal entities to build region-wide support for injury prevention campaigns and improvements in public policy.
  • Use a variety of public media to raise awareness of injury rates, causation, attribution, health impact, and ways to reduce injuries.
  • Participate in appropriate state and national injury prevention meetings, conferences, and teleconferences.
  • Coordinate local and regional injury prevention training opportunities such as cold weather survival, Kids Don't Float, boating safety, hunter safety, and/or other appropriate courses.
  • Routinely assemble reports on program activities for the Board of Directors, as well as any quarterly and annual reports for injury prevention grants.
  • Actively seek out additional funding to build, strengthen and enhance a comprehensive injury prevention program suitable for Northwest Alaska.
