About The Position

The Infusion RN assumes a leadership role in providing professional nursing care to patients within the Mercy Cancer Care Infusion Clinic. Responsibilities include assessment, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the continuum plan of care in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team, promoting the organizational commitment to customer service.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing or equivalent.
  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Michigan.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Three years of RN experience with two years of experience in oncology.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification preferred.
  • Ability to make professional nursing judgments in following physician orders while working within established nursing policies and procedures.
  • Positive interpersonal communication skills to effectively instruct and provide education to patients and families.
  • Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers, and community groups.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients for immediate and post-discharge needs in conjunction with the patient care team and the patient/family, in accordance with SJM-O policies.
  • Provides patient care that reflects respect for patients' rights, dignity, values, culture preferences, and expressed needs, with attention to providing comfort, relieving pain, and alleviating anxiety.
  • Conducts a utilization management assessment on a visit basis to facilitate appropriate use of health care resources and coordination of care.
  • Collaborates with patient/family, physician, hospital staff, and community agencies to develop discharge plans that prepare patients for continued care needs.
  • Implements care in accordance with the plan or clinical protocol, appropriately utilizing care team members in the care delivery process.
  • Identifies variances from clinical protocols, resolves or refers issues as appropriate, and identifies opportunities for the improvement of care.
  • Responds appropriately to changes in workloads, patient census, and/or staffing levels.
  • Assesses patient/family needs for information and education across the continuum, plans and implements patient teaching using a variety of techniques and methods, and evaluates effectiveness of educational interventions.
  • Administers ordered medication and treatments as ordered by physicians.
  • Monitors patients for side effects of treatments, coordinates with physician, and implements supportive care measures.
  • Performs phlebotomy and laboratory on-site testing, records test results, and communicates test results to the physician.
  • Responsible for patient medical record documentation in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Triages patients, follows established protocols, assures appropriate advice is given to patients and families, and reinforces discharge education with patients according to the direction of the physician.
  • Participates in staff meetings, education in-service programs, and completes required continuous training and education.
  • Implements quality control programs by reviewing and logging all quality controls and acting appropriately when results read out of control limits.
