About The Position

The Northwestern Medicine Information Services Summer Internship presents a valuable opportunity for associates, undergraduate and graduate students to gain an experiential education and for Northwestern Medicine to benefit from the service, skills and knowledge that undergraduate and graduate students can offer. These 10–12-week paid summer internships are hosted at our downtown Chicago campus. The IS internship provides an unparalleled experience for select aspiring healthcare IT leaders throughout the Northwestern Medicine system. Information Services strategically supports the organization by: Leveraging AI, automation and rollout of advanced cyber controls that support digital transformation strategies Implementing advanced technologies in clinical and administrative areas Furthering development of the end user support model to help enhance modern infrastructure The Northwestern Medicine IS Internship program is broken up into 5 domain areas: 1. Analytics & Data Skills you can expect to use, based on team placement: SQL (queries, relational databases) Python Power BI, Tableau Databricks, SSIS, SSRS, Azure Data Factory ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Attention to detail and time management Typical Degrees in this field: Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Sciences, or related field 2. Software Development & Digital Products Skills you can expect to use, based on Programming: C#, Python, JavaScript Web Development: ASP.NET, RESTful APIs, HTML, CSS, JQuery Frameworks: .NET Core, Entity Framework, Angular, Razor, React, Blazor Tools: Visual Studio, VS Code, SQL Server Management Studio Agile/Scrum methodologies Quick learner and self-starter Typical Degrees in this field: Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Systems 3. Infrastructure & Technical Services Skills you can expect to use: Basic networking concepts and classes Hardware/software troubleshooting General IT knowledge Cybersecurity / IAM ServiceNow Excel Scripting (PowerShell preferred) Ability to multitask in fast-paced environments Cloud platform familiarity (Azure) Typical Degrees in this field: Degree in IT, Computer Engineering, or tech-related field 4. User Experience & Employee Engagement Skills you can expect to use: Strong verbal and written communication Collaboration and team player mindset Adaptability and flexibility Organizational and detail orientation Entry-level design using Figma Basic UI/UX design principles Typical Degrees in this field: Degree in HCI, UX Design, Psychology, Sociology, Digital Media, Informatics 5. Operations & Strategic Initiatives Skills you can expect to use: Project management fundamentals Communication across all levels (patients and leadership) Time management and multitasking Problem-solving and analytical thinking Customer service focus Quick learning and self-starting attitude Typical Degrees in this field: Degree in IT, Computer Science, Business Management, Information Systems

Requirements

  • Candidates must have a High School Diploma or the General Equivalent and have completed at least 2 semesters in an Associates or undergraduate program or 30 credit hours.
  • The most promising applications demonstrate superior academic performance, leadership skills,and relevant healthcare experience.
  • Interns project maturity, professionalism, and initiative.
  • Candidates must be comfortable in complex organizations and display a passion for a career in healthcare IT.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of at least the sophomore year of study.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine.
  • Successfully complete projects and work tasks assigned.
  • Develop a working knowledge of hospital operations to a degree that allows for the successful completion of projects supporting a variety of hospital operations.
  • Develop working relationships with staff and management that allows for successful business interactions across all levels of the organization.
  • Participation in activities designed for development of interns during their assignment at Northwestern Medicine; which include:
