About The Position

The Information Governance Attorney is an integral part of Latham’s Information Governance team. This role will be responsible for advising on information governance issues to ensure the firm’s management of information meets applicable legal, ethical, security, and privacy requirements across all jurisdictions in which the firm operates, while managing the preservation, collection, and review of documents and electronically stored information, including developing procedures and technologies for a streamlined, cost‑effective electronic discovery and disclosure programme for matters involving the firm as a party or custodian. This role will be located in either our New York office, or in our Global Services Office in downtown Los Angeles. Please note that this role may be eligible for a flexible working schedule that allows for a hybrid and in-office presence.

Requirements

  • Exhibit excellent leadership skills, including organizing, planning, problem‑solving, and decision‑making necessary for effective supervision
  • Possess knowledge of the concepts, principles, and management of electronically stored information (ESI) as they relate to legal matters, including the use of ESI management and review tools
  • Demonstrate knowledge of security laws, including breach‑notification requirements
  • A university degree in law, with additional coursework in a technology‑related field, preferably
  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA)‑accredited law school, preferably
  • Qualification or licensure to practise law in the jurisdiction in which the candidate resides, or in a jurisdiction where Latham has an office
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience, preferably
  • Experience with electronic discovery or disclosure, due diligence, or records management, preferably
  • Admission to at least one United States state bar

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the daily operation and maintenance of the firm’s internal legal holds and the collection and preservation of documents
  • Working with client‑facing attorneys to review confidentiality and security obligations in client agreements and outside counsel guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable terms
  • Providing internal pre‑litigation data management support and coordinating the collection, release, and destruction of information in response to discovery requests, protective orders, agreements, and applicable retention periods
  • Advising on security, privacy, and artificial intelligence (AI) issues, including assisting with the evaluation of new applications and services and reviewing vendor contractual terms
  • Developing internal policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices relating to information governance, including security, privacy, and artificial intelligence issues
  • Protecting and maintaining any highly sensitive, confidential, privileged, financial, and/or proprietary information that Latham & Watkins retains
