About The Position

The Washington Post is seeking a sharp, ambitious and conceptually strong reporter to cover the evolving information economy — the systems, platforms and power structures that shape how information is created, distributed, monetized and consumed. This is a wide-ranging and fast-moving beat at the intersection of technology, business, media and society. The reporter will examine how information flows through digital platforms, how it is packaged and amplified, and how economic incentives — from advertising and subscriptions to creator monetization and AI — are reshaping what people see, trust and understand about the world. We’re looking for a journalist who can move fluidly between breaking news, trend reporting and ambitious enterprise. The ideal candidate will bring a strong sense of curiosity about how the modern information ecosystem works — and how it is changing — along with the ability to translate complex systems into clear, compelling journalism for a broad audience. This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

Requirements

  • A track record of producing impactful reporting on technology, media, business or related fields.
  • Strong source-building skills and the ability to cultivate relationships across a range of industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to break news and deliver ambitious enterprise on a competitive beat.
  • Comfort explaining complex systems — including algorithms, business models and digital ecosystems — in clear and engaging ways.
  • A sharp instinct for stories that resonate with broad audiences.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to work quickly under deadline pressure.
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to experiment with new approaches to storytelling.

  • Investigate the impact of these systems on public discourse, trust, misinformation and audience behavior.
  • Identify emerging trends and anticipate how the information landscape is evolving.

  • Produce explanatory and analytical journalism that makes complex systems accessible to a general audience.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across technology, business, politics and audience teams to deliver comprehensive coverage.
