About The Position

The Infection Preventionist (IP) participates in implementing the Infection Control Plan under the direction of the Manager and Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Hospital Epidemiologist. The IP works to prevent, identify, monitor, and, control the spread of, infection. The IP participates in surveillance, data collection and analysis, data presentation, improvement teams, policy review, and staff education across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree. Specific course work: Bachelor's degree in healthcare-related field -OR- a Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or Healthcare Administration.
  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC) within three (3) years of hire or transfer and effective 2/16/26 certification must be maintained.
  • 1-2 years of healthcare experience
  • Customer Service -this position will respond to multiple requests from leaders within the organization as well as from outside entities. Must be able to respond quickly and graciously to requests for information and standards interpretation. Responses are often required in presentation format.
  • Interpersonal skills - this position will respond effectively to inquiries and produce unbiased analysis of controversial or complex topics. Strong communication skills are required.
  • Communication Skills - must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing in a manner that resonates with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality - this position will have access to high level, sensitive, confidential, data. Must be able to maintain this data in a confidential manner.
  • Organizational Skills - must be highly skilled in managing multiple priorities and project management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • The ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents.
  • The ability to deal with both abstract and concrete concepts.
  • The ability to manage web-based databases.
  • The ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous infection prevention and control experience.
  • Acute care experience in a clinical role.
  • Experience with electronic surveillance systems.
  • Experience in Public Health with an emphasis in epidemiology.
  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC)

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and analyzes data from a variety of sources including microbiology reports, surveillance activities and patient records (20%)
  • Develop and presents staff education programs as requested (10%)
  • Works with Employee Health Department on infection control procedures, employee exposures, personal hygiene, and employee health programs, as appropriate (5%)
  • Collaborates with others to establish isolation processes/procedures/locations. Develops and revises policies and procedures as necessary, in conjunction with the Infection Control Committee (15%)
  • Communicates with the Public Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as appropriate and necessary (5%)
  • Compiles and interprets data for presentation to various levels of the organization including, hospital leadership groups, Infection Control Committee, Medical Staff Committees, Performance Improvement Committees and other groups as requested (20%)
  • Assists the Director, Medical Director, and Infection Control Committee with the development of surveillance plans based on the populations served by the facility, services provided, previous surveillance data, and annual risk assessment (10%)
  • Assists in the development, review and revision of policies and procedures throughout the organization utilizing published recommendations and evidence-based best practices (5%)
  • Monitors infection prevention and control practices and compliance with policies and procedures in assigned areas of responsibility. Provides consultation as necessary in these areas to insure best practices and policies are adhered to (10%)
  • •All other duties as assigned by supervisor within job scope.
  • •Participates in hospital-wide and department specific education and training as directed
  • •Maintains patient confidentiality and acts in an ethical manner at all times.
  • •Participates in performance improvement (PI) initiatives, performance improvement teams (PITs), and root cause analyses (RCAs) as necessary
  • •Reviews emails and voicemails regularly (no less than daily on assigned workdays) and responds appropriately and timely.
  • •Supports research and the implementation of evidenced based best practices.
  • •Supports organizational mission statement, goals, and vision.
  • •Works collaboratively with peers.
  • •Supports all customer service goals.
  • •Adheres to dress code, policies and procedures, time and attendance guidelines.
  • •Attends staff and committee meetings as requested; may coordinate agendas and record minutes
  • •May cover for peers during leaves
  • •May provide after hours and weekend coverage during times of a high-consequence infectious disease
