Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Infection Preventionist - Full Time, Days - primarily days, variable as needed. Under the guidance of the Director of Infection Prevention and Control, the Infection Preventionist is responsible for ensuring optimal infection prevention practices across all NYU Langone Health patient care delivery sites. This position minimizes infection risks for patients, employees, and visitors through evidence-based strategies and effective surveillance. The RN Infection Preventionist is responsible for identifying patients at high risk of infections using their clinical expertise. They focus on ensuring patient safety by assessing potential infection risks and collaborating with healthcare teams to implement targeted infection prevention strategies that enhance patient safety and outcomes. The Non-RN Infection Preventionist is responsible for applying specialized knowledge of infection control protocols and data analysis to monitor infection trends. They utilize surveillance systems to track data and report findings, which are used to shape infection prevention strategies. Key responsibilities include auditing infection control practices and data, collaborating with data teams to develop and evaluate surveillance tools, and providing insights on infection trends to guide broader infection prevention initiatives.

Requirements

  • RN: Level I: BS in Nursing with current NYS licensure. Minimum of two years of clinical experience or experience in infection prevention or related field. Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) required within 3 years of hire.
  • Level II: BS in Nursing with current NYS licensure. Masters degree in nursing, Epidemiology, Public Health, or related field and three years of relevant experience; OR BS in Nursing with 4 years of relevant experience. CIC certification is required within 3 years.
  • Level III: BS in Nursing with current NYS licensure. Masters degree in nursing, Epidemiology, Public Health, or related field and four years of experience in infection prevention or related field; OR BS in Nursing with 5 years of relevant experience. CIC certification required.
  • Non-RN Infection Preventionist: Level I: Bachelors degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Microbiology, or related field. Minimum of two years of experience in infection prevention or related field. Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) required within 3 years.
  • Level II: Bachelors degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or related field. Masters degree in a related field and three years of relevant experience; OR a Bachelors degree and four years of relevant experience. CIC certification is required within 3 years.
  • Level III: Bachelors degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or related field. Masters degree in a related field and four years of experience in infection prevention or related field; OR a Bachelors degree and five years of relevant experience. CIC certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct infection surveillance to detect clusters and outbreaks.
  • Collect and aggregate data, reporting "reportable diseases" to public health agencies.
  • Implement infection prevention policies by conducting rounds in clinical areas and identifying deficiencies.
  • Monitor microbiology reports for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
  • Assist in the investigation of infections and participate in safety rounds.
  • Provide consultation regarding isolation practices and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct unit-based rounds.
  • Performs all the responsibilities of the previous level of Infection Preventionists as directed by the Director
  • Lead outbreak investigations and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Review and implement infection prevention regulations and guidelines.
  • Mentor junior infection preventionists and support their professional development.
  • Collaborate with health departments.
  • Identify individuals at higher risk for infections.
  • Develop and evaluate educational programs related to infection prevention for staff.
  • Performs all the responsibilities of the previous levels of Infection Preventionists as directed by the Director
  • Serve as an expert resource for infection prevention to the healthcare team and external partners.
  • Lead strategic infection prevention initiatives and contribute to policy development.
  • Collaborate with data teams to develop novel infection surveillance systems.
  • Analyze data trends, interpret results, and create actionable insights.
  • Develop and lead infection prevention education initiatives for staff and community.
  • Participate in the annual Infection Prevention Program Risk Assessment and Plan.
