About The Position
The Infection Preventionist position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is a full-time role dedicated to supporting nursing homes and dialysis facilities in the North West region of Alabama. The primary focus of this position is to assist these facilities in establishing and maintaining a robust infection prevention infrastructure that ensures the safety of residents, visitors, and healthcare personnel. This role is critical in the ongoing efforts to control and prevent infections within healthcare settings, particularly in long-term care environments. The Infection Preventionist will conduct on-site infection control assessments (ICAR) at participating long-term care (LTC) facilities, providing detailed feedback reports to help facilities improve their infection control practices. In addition, the position involves offering consultation during outbreaks or clusters of infections, analyzing bacteriology reports, and interpreting infection statistics to recommend effective control measures. The Infection Preventionist will also engage in outreach efforts to encourage participation in ICAR assessments and address any hesitancy from facilities. Training and technical assistance will be provided to nursing and long-term care facilities, either in-person or remotely, to support the implementation of best practices for preventing the transmission of infectious agents. The role requires frequent communication with local public health departments and participation in ongoing educational programs related to infection prevention, including topics such as SARS-CoV-2, TB, and universal precautions. The position is primarily remote but requires travel to various LTC facilities for site visits and outbreak investigations as needed.
