As an Infection Preventionist with KDHE's HAI/AR Section, you'll provide expert guidance, on-site assessments, mentorship, and outbreak support across a wide variety of healthcare settings. As an Infection Preventionist with KDHE's HAI/AR Section, you'll provide expert guidance, on-site assessments, mentorship, and outbreak support across a wide variety of healthcare settings. This role offers the opportunity to shape infection prevention practices, build strong partnerships with healthcare facilities, and contribute to high-impact initiatives that strengthen patient safety statewide.

  • Provide scientific advice and technical assistance to the Kansas Infection Prevention community and external partners with respect to infection prevention and control in a variety of healthcare settings. Provide needed on-site (travel involved) and tele/video-conference assessments of varying healthcare facilities throughout Kansas. This will be based on CDC's ICAR tools with a large emphasis on performing observations of infection prevention and control measures in action at the facilities. A findings report will be generated and provided to the facility within 1-2 weeks from the assessment. Additional tools and resources will be provided with the findings report when necessary. Perform follow-up assessments as needed. Help create useful tools for facilities using common deficiencies seen during assessments.
  • Provide IPC mentorship for new and established Infection Preventionists (IP) to provide one-on-one education and guidance.
  • Provide infection prevention and control consultation to varying healthcare facilities in Kansas via phone, email, and onsite when needed.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of IPC tools, resources, and education. Provide education and training to the IPC community.
  • Participate in the KS HAI/AR Advisory Group. Participate in at least one subcommittee of the Advisory Group. Help fill co-lead positions on the subcommittees when needed.
  • Provide infection prevention and control technical assistance and participate in field epidemiologic investigations of HAI/AR outbreaks. Collaborate with the IDER Epi Team, with local health departments, and health care providers.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations such as (KFMC, KHA, and Qsource/ESRD Network) to assist with healthcare facility collaboratives focusing on increasing education, communication, and networking between facilities with emphasis on infection prevention and control and other quality improvement efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including serving as a member of the KDHE Disaster Response Team as needed to assure the agency's public and environmental health response is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism.
  • Responsible for reading and implementing the KDHE 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. Reviewing the Core Values, Priority Areas, Impact Statement and assisting to complete the Strategic Plan Summary and assure Goals are met.
  • Associate's degree in nursing
  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or will obtain within 5 years
  • Registered nurse (or other health-related license) and/or CIC certification
  • Associate's degree in nursing and at least two years of experience in healthcare specifically in nursing, public health, microbiology, quality improvement, or related field.
  • Current Kansas Nursing License if employee is trained in a health-related field (e.g., Nursing or Dental Hygiene).
  • Current CBIC certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) - if not current can recertify within 2 years of starting the position or certify for the first time within 5 years of starting the position.
  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate: A valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is a condition of employment for all employees of the State of Kansas.   • Bachelor's or master's degree in science, healthcare
