About The Position

This position is eligible for an additional sign-on bonus. The Infection Prevention Officer supports infectious disease prevention, management, screening, reporting, and employee-health compliance within the facility healthcare program. The role supports implementation of infectious disease precautions; tuberculosis screening, isolation, and follow-up processes; maintenance of medical employee health documentation; staff education on health emergencies and infection-related practices; and coordination with internal leadership, public health authorities, and the government medical authority to promote a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Requirements

  • Must have and maintain an unrestricted and current license as a Registered Nurse issued by the state of Maryland or have the ability to obtain one.
  • Work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. The program must have been accredited by a recognized accrediting body at the time the degree was obtained.
  • This position is considered hazardous duty.
  • Required to walk unaided at a normal pace for up to 5 minutes and maintain balance.
  • Required to jog/fast walk up to ¼ mile.
  • Requires physical exertion such as lifting objects greater than 30 pounds.
  • Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling.
  • Must have the ability to assist sick, injured, or aging patients or staff exiting the building (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling, or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than self).
  • Must be able to see, hear and smell with aids if necessary.
  • Must be able to lift, push, or carry 30 pounds.
  • Must perform the duties of my job in a stressful and often austere environment without physical limitations.
  • Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Average manual dexterity for computer operation.
  • Phone or computer use for extended periods of time.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must maintain current/physical residency in the continental U.S.
  • Pass a medical examination conducted by a licensed physician within 30 days prior to initial assignment.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a person lawfully admitted into the U.S. for permanent residence.
  • Have resided in the U.S. for the last five years (unless abroad on official U.S. government duty).
  • Successfully engage in and complete a thorough Background Investigation.
  • Poses or have ability to obtain required security clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Support adherence to all infectious disease prevention and management guidelines, treatment, and reporting requirements required by local, state, and federal public health authorities.
  • Support implementation of infectious disease and standard precautions, including isolation, cohorting, and quarantine recommendations, in accordance with the most current guidance issued by the government medical authority's public health, safety, and preparedness unit.
  • Support medical intake screening processes to ensure infectious disease screening capacity, including tuberculosis screening within the intake processing area.
  • Support tuberculosis screening completed within 12 hours of patient admission, including symptom screening and testing using a Food and Drug Administration approved method.
  • Ensure patients with symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis disease are immediately placed in an airborne infection isolation room and promptly evaluated for suspected tuberculosis disease.
  • Support follow-up for patients with positive tuberculosis screening results, including chest radiograph completion within 5 days when required.
  • Support notification to the government medical authority and the local health department within one working day for patients with confirmed or suspected tuberculosis disease and support continuity-of-care planning before release.
  • Support annual tuberculosis evaluation processes for patients, consistent with prior screening method and current clinical requirements.
  • Support airborne precautions by monitoring infection-control expectations related to intake screening airflow and annual inspection of airborne infection isolation rooms by a certified technician or in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain or support maintenance of medical employee health files on-site in accordance with privacy requirements, including initial and annual tuberculosis screening results, vaccination records and declination forms, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Form 301 incident forms, bloodborne pathogen exposure documentation, respirator medical clearance, respirator fit test results, and other employee health documents.
  • Verify or support verification that medical personnel provide evidence of tuberculosis clearance within the last 12 months before direct patient care and as required for exposure, investigation, or medical indication.
  • Support annual employee tuberculosis follow-up requirements in accordance with Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
  • Track or support tracking of employee immunization documentation, titers, and declination forms, including Hepatitis B vaccination documentation or declination.
  • Support employee health review of highly recommended immunizations for personnel working in a custody or detention environment, including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Diphtheria, Tetanus, a-cellular Pertussis, seasonal influenza, and COVID-19.
  • Support required staff education and annual training related to response to health-related emergencies within 4 minutes, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator use, emergency first aid, signs of potential health emergencies, methods of obtaining emergency medical assistance, signs and symptoms of mental illness and suicide risk, and emergency medical care procedures.
  • Support compliance monitoring, documentation, and readiness for inspections, audits, corrective actions, and review of health-related records and practices.
  • Complete reports, logs, and documentation accurately and in a timely manner, and escalate urgent infection-control concerns, serious health events, or noncompliance issues to facility leadership and required government representatives.
  • Perform other infection prevention and employee health duties that are expressly required by the contract and assigned by leadership.
  • Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
