About The Position

The Infection Prevention and Control Specialist (IPCS) participates in the development, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of the surveillance, prevention, and control of infection (SPCI) program for the Health System. Major goals of the program include surveillance for health care-associated infections (HAIs), integration of infection prevention in patient safety programs, risk assessment and mitigation of cross transmission of microorganisms, application of epidemiologic principles, implementation of infection prevention processes, education and collaboration with leadership and care providers, liaison with community partners, and planning for response to emerging diseases and infectious disease emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Medical Technology, or other health science.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a healthcare facility; infection prevention & control experience preferred.
  • Current State of Michigan RN license for incumbents with BSN.
  • Certification in Infection Control & Epidemiology (CIC) must be obtained within 2 years of becoming eligible.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Public Health or other health-related field preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with adult education.
  • Familiarity with software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize computer-based software and electronic information systems to assist with identification of HAIs.
  • Design, collect, analyze, manage, and report findings from surveillance to lower frequency and prevent HAIs.
  • Investigate, report, and respond to increasing frequency, clusters, sentinel events, or outbreaks of HAIs.
  • Develop and conduct education programs on infection prevention for healthcare personnel, patients, and visitors.
  • Develop, review, evaluate, implement, and revise System policies and procedures based on scientific evidence.
  • Provide consultation and education for healthcare personnel on infection control problems.
  • Serve on committees and collaborative quality improvement practice teams.
  • Facilitate reports of communicable diseases to public health agencies.
  • Support adherence to regulatory, licensure, and accreditation requirements.
  • Collaborate with Employee Health Services on immunization practices and exposure management.
