About The Position

The Department of Public Health (DPH) is recruiting for a Infection Prevention and Control Nurse Supervisor who will supervise nursing and other personnel in special County-wide programs including Tuberculosis (TB) Control and the Healthcare-Associated Infections and Infection Prevention (HAIIP) Program. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for ensuring excellence in nursing and evidence-based practice, while optimizing resources for achieving individual and community health outcomes. The Nurse Supervisor will collaborate with hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, and community agencies to reduce communicable disease transmission, strengthen infection prevention practices, and improve health outcomes countywide. The Nurse Supervisor may also support other programs within the Communicable Disease Section (CDS), including epidemiology, immunizations, and community collaboration initiatives. The Nurse Supervisor will supervise public health nurses and staff assigned to TB prevention and control. Duties include oversight of case management, directly observed therapy (DOT and video DOT), outbreak response, community screenings, and care coordination. The Nurse Supervisor ensures that staff follow national TB control standards and collaborates with medical providers, laboratories, and state partners to protect the community from TB transmission. The Nurse Supervisor provides leadership for countywide infection prevention efforts, addressing outbreaks in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Responsibilities include supervising nurse case managers and other personnel, ensuring compliance with infection control standards, and coordinating outbreak investigations with state and local partners. This work is critical in reducing HAIs, which affect 1 in 31 hospitalized patients nationally and result in tens of thousands of deaths annually.

Requirements

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN)
  • Valid Public Health Nurse (PHN) certificate issued by the CA BRN
  • Valid Healthcare Provider level Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
  • Eighteen (18) months of full-time equivalent experience as a certified PHN.
  • Qualifying experience must include six (6) months of experience providing nursing leadership or case management in infection prevention or communicable disease investigation, including tuberculosis (TB) control activities, within a healthcare, community, or public health setting.
  • Nurse lead/supervisory experience must be clearly demonstrated on the work experience section of the application in order to be considered.
  • RNs must possess a bachelor's degree (or higher) in Nursing to apply for California Public Health Nurse certification.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position.
  • Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
  • Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.
