Van Metre is seeking an Industrial Systems Engineering Intern for Summer 2026! This is a hybrid internship opportunity that will require the intern to report to Ashburn, VA 2-3 days a week with occasional trips to the manufacturing facility in Winchester, VA. All Van Metre interns will have the opportunity to meet and network with interns and employees from other departments and divisions. Interns will engage in a series of trainings that will help them to excel in their particular roles and to broaden their understanding of the company and the many different ways to become involved at Van Metre. The internship program is designed to give our interns valuable and broadly applicable experience that will continue to be an asset well into the future. Please note: This internship is contingent upon signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) Role Summary: We are seeking a driven Industrial & Systems Engineering student ready for an immersive, real-world experience with an innovative Research & Development team. Van Metre is in the process of reinventing the home building process — moving from “stick building” to an industrialized approach where prefabricated home components are assembled in a factory. In this role, you will collaborate with architects, builders, structural engineers, accountants, Mitek industrial systems engineering consultants, and MEP trades to support the design of an efficient assembly line and building delivery approach that improves manufacturing and construction outcomes. Van Metre's Summer 2026 Internship Program is an 8-week program in which Interns get the opportunity to hone the skills in their field but also learn about our business. The Program starts the first week in June and runs through early August. Interns will attend trainings and planned sessions with Executives from every team, learning about every aspect of a product, from inception to completion, sale, and management. The goal is to assist in your quest to become a well-rounded individual, just like our company is!
Requirements
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering
- Current Junior taking Senior Design Fall 2026 is preferred; you may have the option of joining a Van Metre capstone team for the 2026/2027 academic year
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with CAD, layout tools, or simulation software a plus
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively
- Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn and innovate
- Enthusiastic about manufacturing systems, construction innovation, and operational design
Responsibilities
- Assist in plant design and layout to optimize factory workflow
- Serve as a liaison to Mitek Industrial Systems Engineering Consultants
- Support development of construction management and scheduling processes
- Analyze manufacturing efficiency and recommend improvements
- Research robotics and industrialized equipment technology and assist with specification
- Investigate various modular and prefabrication building approaches
- Compile data, create process documentation, and support cross-functional project teams
- Present analysis and recommendations to R&D leadership
