About The Position

The Welder position involves laying out, fitting, and welding together various metal components such as pipes, boilers, tanks, plates, and structural steel. The role requires a strong understanding of layout, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, and welding procedures to determine the necessary work. The Welder must be capable of following instructions and planning work in a logical sequence, determining the tools and equipment needed for each task. The position is predominantly outdoors at an industrial construction site, requiring physical stamina and the ability to work in various positions and conditions.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of field experience as a Class-A Welder
  • Must pass a Performance Weld Test (SMAW / GTAW / FCAW)
  • Must hold a valid TWIC Card
  • Must hold a valid OSHA Basic Plus
  • Must be able to pass all Safety Council related courses
  • Must undergo Pre-Employment Screening (physical, drug & alcohol screen, audiogram, fit test if applicable)

Responsibilities

  • Reads and understands layout, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, and welding procedures to determine work to be done.
  • Plans work in logical sequence and determines tools/equipment needed.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together.
  • Bolts, clamps, and tack welds parts to secure in position for welding.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts into portable holder or threads electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and joint edges.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions and examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Manually applies filler rod to supply weld metal.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece using wire brush, grinder, or chemical bath.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, spatter.
  • Preheats work piece using torch or heating furnace.
  • Repairs products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts.
