About The Position

The Industrial Painting & Coatings Journeyman/Specialist performs skilled journeyman-level work involving surface preparation and application of industrial coatings on piping, tanks, structures, equipment, facilities, and vehicles. This role supports safe, reliable, and compliant operations in industrial, maintenance, and infrastructure environments. The position may provide work direction to other painters and ensures all work meets safety, quality, and specification requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a state or federally certified industrial painter apprenticeship OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred 4–5 years of journeyman-level industrial painting and coating experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with surface preparation, spray application, and industrial coatings.
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and industrial spray equipment.
  • Strong understanding of coating systems, surface preparation standards, and safety practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and in industrial environments.
  • Strong attention to detail, safety, and quality.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and lead others when required.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Oil and Gas Production Equipment, heavy industrial, or other infrastructure environments.
  • Extensive experience with abrasive blasting and material preparation.
  • AMPP (formerly NACE) or equivalent certifications, including: Certified Coatings Inspector (any level) Abrasive Blasting Spray Application Fundamentals of Protective Coatings Lead/Hazardous Coatings Removal
  • Experience training or leading industrial painting crews.

Responsibilities

  • Surface Preparation & Coating Application Prepare surfaces using multiple methods including abrasive blasting, hand tooling, and mechanical preparation.
  • Apply industrial coatings including epoxies, urethanes, polyurea, polysiloxanes, and other protective systems using roller, brush, and spray equipment.
  • Operate spray systems such as air-assisted, airless, HVLP, electric, and plural component systems.
  • Perform priming and topcoat application in accordance with specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and governing standards.
  • Construct and maintain containment, tenting, scaffolding, ladders, and lifts to safely access work areas and protect adjacent assets.
  • Quality, Safety & Compliance Interpret and execute work based on drawings, specifications, and procedures.
  • Conduct and participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-job briefs, and safety meetings.
  • Ensure coatings are applied in accordance with QA/QC requirements and internal coating application procedures.
  • Properly use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify defective tools, equipment, or materials and remove them from service.
  • Perform lockout/tagout and confined space work in accordance with established procedures.
  • Leadership & Coordination Depending on competency level, provide work direction and training to crew members.
  • Monitor material usage and report shortages or overages.
  • Assist with planning, scheduling, and coordinating work activities to meet production and quality goals.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas at job completion or end of shift.
  • Additional Duties Perform painting and coating work in industrial, maintenance, or remote environments.
  • Lift and handle materials and equipment up to 75 pounds as part of normal duties.
  • Other duties across all categories as assigned by supervisor or leadership.
