The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled maintenance, fabrication, overhaul and repair of mechanical equipment located within water or wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, and lift stations. This classification is safety sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the County’s Drug & Alcohol Policy. The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers; confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems, and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations. Reviews system designs, specifications, and products, attends pre-construction meetings, and recommends changes in water/wastewater facilities mechanical systems; troubleshoots problems and recommends corrective actions based on skilled knowledge of mechanical repair practices; and performs preventative maintenance and corrective repair work on water/wastewater facilities and equipment. Fabricates and machines repair parts for equipment; welds steel, brass and aluminum; operates lathes, mill/drill presses, welders and various other metal working power and hand tools; and locates leaks and detects defects in water/wastewater equipment and machinery according to established plans and standards. Monitors, reviews and validates work practices for quality control of processes and to ensure adherence to safety standards; and monitors and trains crew members on safety methods and standards. Inputs and gathers data from Supervisory Control Data Acquisition system (SCADA) and runs reports as necessary.
