About The Position

Leidos is currently seeking an individual to support the Occupational Health Group with industrial hygiene activities at the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The industrial hygiene technician’s responsibilities at GRC will include support of research operations through the knowledge of industrial hygiene principals, the evaluation and maintenance of IH equipment, support programs such as local exhaust ventilation systems, Respiratory Fit Testing and automated external defibrillators. This is an on-site position. The position works under general supervision of the Lead Industrial Hygienist and is expected to apply fundamental industrial hygiene concepts, practices, and procedures. Primary Responsibilities Include: Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control environmental factors or stresses arising in research, construction, and industrial workplace settings which may cause sickness, impaired health and well-being, or significant discomfort among workers. Support the implementation of occupational health and industrial hygiene programs including but not limited to local exhaust ventilation, indoor air quality, and automated external defibrillators. Conduct regular evaluations of local exhaust ventilation systems for functionality and flow rate. Diagnose equipment failure and recommend for maintenance systems found out of compliance. Provide regular testing and maintenance of on-site automated external defibrillators. Perform regular calibration and maintenance of industrial hygiene equipment for indoor air quality and moisture; collect field measurements during water intrusion events and recommend remediation. Interpret and apply regulatory standards and guidance from organizations such as OSHA, ASHRAE, ACGIH, and NIOSH, and support the implementation of the requirements of the most current version of NPR 1800.1, NASA Occupational Health Program Procedures and the GRC Occupational Health Programs Manual. Maintain thorough and legible notes and documentation, develop technical reports, present findings and recommendations, and implement controls. Perform comprehensive annual program reviews including lessons learned recommendations for improvement. May also support food safety program, Legionella, ergonomics and premise plumbing program. This is an on-site position at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Requirements

  • At a minimum, an associate degree in chemical or physical sciences, public health, environmental sciences, or industrial hygiene and 2 years of relevant experience. A Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Knowledge and use of computers and typical business software (i.e., word processing and spreadsheets).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and switch between projects easily.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with a “yes, if” rather than “no” mentality towards health and safety.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with research organizations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships and communicate risk with senior management, researchers, technicians, and other safety professionals.
  • Ability to write and critically review technical reports for all field work conducted. Technical reports include executive summaries, process background, means/methods, results, discussions, and recommendations.
  • Capable of carrying and climbing a ladder.
  • Must be able to pass a Public Trust background investigation.
  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent. Residence is required due to length of investigation required for non-U.S. persons.

Nice To Haves

  • A 4-year degree in chemical or physical sciences, public health, environmental sciences, or industrial hygiene and 0 - 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of industrial hygiene equipment for evaluation of indoor air quality, moisture intrusion, chemical contamination.
  • Familiar with the ACGIH Ventilation Manual and ASHRAE standards.
  • Familiar with food safety regulations and/or office ergonomics evaluations.
