Industrial Design Intern

About the position

This position is located at our HQ in Durham, NC. Expected program dates are May 19 - August 15, 2024. The Industrial Design Intern will contribute within the Hardware development function to help design and create drawings in SolidWorks to support Industrial Design concepts and ideas. They will also be involved in product development meetings and brainstorming sessions, as well as presenting any designs and concepts/models created. There will also be some shop experiences in prototyping 'proof of concepts' parts as needed and utilizing 3D printing machine.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the Hardware development function.
• Create drawings in SolidWorks to support Industrial Design concepts.
• Participate in product development meetings and brainstorming sessions.
• Present designs and concepts/models created.
• Engage in shop experiences for prototyping 'proof of concepts' parts.
• Utilize 3D printing machine.
• Perform industry research and create a presentation on findings.
• Generate user interface for concept products.

Requirements

• Proficient in SolidWorks and basic CAD skills.
• Working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and PowerPoint.
• Good written and visual presentation skills; hand sketching is a plus.
• Experience with basic shop tools: hand tools, bench-top power tools.
• Ability to make simple mockups using foam, foamcore, wood, etc.
• Motivated self-starter who seeks additional tasks.
• Basic research skills, user study, and market study.
• UI/UX knowledge is a plus.
• Ability to communicate ideas to a team, both in person and virtually.
• Understanding of the Design Process.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with 3D printer usage.
