The Industrial Commission Litigation Counsel will serve as a key member of the legal team in the Office of Legal Affairs at the UNC System Office. This role will focus primarily on handling workers' compensation claims and tort claims filed with the North Carolina Industrial Commission on behalf of the University. Case assignments could arise from any of the seventeen campuses of the University of North Carolina System and the System Office itself. The Industrial Commission Litigation Counsel will be responsible for providing legal advice and representation related to these claims, including appearances before the North Carolina Industrial Commission, conducting discovery, negotiating settlements, and managing all aspects of litigation. This position offers a strong opportunity for practitioners seeking frequent administrative litigation experience and an expanded understanding of public-sector risk management and workplace injury law. The attorney will work collaboratively with colleagues in the UNC System Office, attorneys at constituent institutions, the North Carolina Department of Justice, and outside counsel as needed. The role reports to the Litigation Counsel and is part of a high-performing legal team committed to professional excellence, integrity, sound judgment, and collegiality. This position is funded through a shared services agreement.

  • Provide legal advice and representation related to workers' compensation and tort claims.

  • Manage all aspects of litigation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the UNC System Office and other legal entities.
  • Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admission to the North Carolina bar.
  • Four years of legal experience, including substantial trial and/or appellate litigation experience in state and federal proceedings.
  • Experience managing workers' compensation claims.
  • Experience handling tort claims before the North Carolina Industrial Commission.
