About The Position

Interns at Tioga-Hammond & Cowanesque Lakes will assist US Army Corps of Engineer Park Rangers with water safety outreach, and visitor related duties. The Tioga-Hammond & Cowanesque Lake project consists of over 8,000 acres of land and water and receives about 200,000 visitors a year. Work completed by SCA Interns will directly contribute to the safety and enjoyment of park visitors, as well as the conservation and protection of natural resources at the project. Daily work will include interacting with the public and assisting Park Ranger and Natural Resource Specialists with administering the water safety and recreation program. Interns will be exposed to and have an opportunity to participate in support of additional programs such as Flood Risk Management (FRM) and work with local partners for outreach.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must have the ability to effectively speak, read, and write in English.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors and lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Must wear SCA provided attire while on duty.
  • Must possess basic hand tool skills.
  • Position may require extended periods in the outdoors during adverse conditions such as heat, cold or rain.

Nice To Haves

  • Comfortable to engage with the public.
  • Experience operating power tools or using basic maintenance tools/equipment.
  • First Aid/CPR Certified

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretative assistance in the implementation of the Corps’ Water Safety Program by presenting water safety programs throughout the park and at special events.
  • Accompany rangers during vehicle and boat patrols.
  • Update bulletin boards
  • Work on interpretive displays
  • Stock and distribute informative material in information centers
  • Staff information centers in times of high visitation
  • Provide interpretive talks
  • Conduct safety inspections
  • Perform water quality testing
  • Update the public
  • Make repairs in recreation area
  • Assist with setting up and staffing water safety booths at county/state fairs by providing water safety information to the public, while representing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
  • Interact with visitors, providing interpretation, and sharing the history and mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
