About The Position

The SCA participant will be part of the wilderness team at North Cascades National Park. The participant will help staff the Wilderness Information Center, which involves issuing backcountry permits, assisting visitors with trip planning and general inquiries. The participant will also conduct backcountry patrols to check for permit compliance, monitoring of backcountry camps and wilderness areas. The participant will gain excellent experience in park and recreation management working alongside wilderness, climbing and law enforcement rangers. Work will occur in both indoor and outdoor settings. The indoor work will be in an office environment where the intern will use a computer-based permit system and answer visitor inquiries via email and phone. Outdoor work will consist of hiking up to 10 miles per day over uneven and rugged terrain carrying a pack. Trips can vary in length from single day to up to 5 nights. Light trail work may be required and as well as public contacts and toilet maintenance. Training will be provided early season. The participant may also be involved in emergency response up to their level of training; This includes search and rescue, EMS and other events as needed; This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license and ability to operate a government vehicle
  • Basic First Aid and CPR
  • Ability to interact with the public on a regular basis, including handling stressful situations, in a professional, courteous and patient manner
  • Basic ability to hike and backpack safely in a wide variety of environmental conditions, including up to 10 miles per day with heavy loads
  • Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger
  • Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States

Nice To Haves

  • A vehicle is highly recommended due to remote location of duty station
  • Backpacking experience over rugged terrain, including snow and river crossings
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification
  • Knowledge and awareness of Wilderness management issues
  • Basic knowledge of natural resources of the Pacific Northwest ecosystem and recreation opportunities

  • Shared housing provided in the Marblemount compound, located right next to the Wilderness Information Center on Ranger Station Road. Houses may be shared with up to 5 other people, including sharing bedrooms. Furniture and basic cooking supplies are provided.
