About The Position

This position will assist National Park Service personnel and staff with protecting and monitoring the marine and terrestrial ecosystems in War in the Pacific National Historical Park (WAPA) in Guam. Primarily, the position will concern the park's project to remove brown tree snakes and other avian predators from Asan Ridge, a popular hiking area in the park. The goal is to reintroduce native bird species to the ridge, which were extirpated from Guam when invasive brown tree snakes were introduced after WWII. This position would largely focus on assisting with community outreach for the citizen science aspect of the brown tree snake project.

Requirements

  • An interest and prior academic experience in marine and terrestrial ecology (required);
  • Ability carry out physically demanding field work (required);
  • Proficiency in swimming (required);
  • Positive and adaptive mental attitude
  • Driver’s license
  • This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ecological data collection and entry
  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED and O2 administrator certifications
  • Experience or willingness to travel or living outside of the continental US

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with community members and volunteer groups to collect information concerning the brown tree snake control project.
  • Communicate to the public about the brown tree snake project.
  • Preparing social media posts, website updates, informational flyers and signs, and other outreach material.
  • Invasive species control (Little fire ants, Brown Treesnakes) including visual surveys, trapping, baiting and pesticide application
  • Monitoring native and invasive plants, animals and insects
