About The Position

Modoc National Forest is looking for a dedicated Hiking Trail Maintenance Crew Member to join our team. Your primary role will be to help ensure that hiking trails remain safe, accessible, and user‑friendly. Responsibilities include clearing debris from trails, constructing and repairing trail structures, and conducting regular inspections to identify potential hazards. The ideal candidate is capable of sustained physical activity, including lifting, hiking, and fieldwork. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions, and has a strong attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Capable of performing strenuous tasks for up to 8 hours without fatigue and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with the use of hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger.
  • Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Personal Vehicle Required

Nice To Haves

  • First aid certification is preferred.
  • A degree in a related field would be an advantage.
  • A love of the outdoors and a desire to protect nature.
  • Knowledge of local flora and fauna is a plus!

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular inspections of hiking trails to identify and remove hazards
  • Clear trails of debris, fallen trees, and overgrown vegetation.
  • Build and repair trail structures such as bridges, benches, and signs.
  • Coordinate with regional Packers, and pack animals to supply Wilderness base camps.
  • Work with volunteers, youth groups, and local Tribes.
  • Monitor wildlife & livestock activity and report sightings.
  • Monitor and maintain trail drainage to prevent erosion.
  • Assist with mapping and marking of new trails.
  • Work with FS management and other staff to ensure the safety and enjoyment of forest visitors.
  • Stay informed about best tools and practices in trail maintenance.
