About The Position

The individual will work closely with refuge staff, volunteers, and community partners to develop and implement programs that promote successful wildlife management, environmental awareness, and sustainable practices. The intern will play a crucial role in engaging with the local community to foster a sense of stewardship and appreciation for the natural environment.

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program or recently graduated, preferably in environmental science, biology, marine science, wildlife, ecology, or a related field.
  • Passion for wildlife conservation, sustainability, and community engagement.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and educate diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and collaborative approach to tasks.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks as needed.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools, small motorized equipment, social media platforms, and content creation a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and execution of community outreach events and educational programs that highlight the importance of wildlife conservation and sustainability. In specific, we are planning a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
  • Collaborate with refuge staff to design and deliver presentations, workshops, and activities for diverse audiences, including schools, community groups, and visitors. Specifically, we partner with the local Gullah Geechee community to present sustainable workshops that highlight traditional uses of the local flora & fauna.
  • Support wildlife management and habitat restoration projects by participating in fieldwork, such as planting native species, removing invasive plants, controlling invasive wildlife species, and monitoring wildlife populations. The individual will help with feral hog control, wood duck nest box management, waterfowl impoundment management, wildlife food plots, native pollinator gardens, and red-cockaded woodpecker monitoring.
  • Assist with the management of a community garden. Locals from the surrounding communities participate in a community garden each summer. The individual will assist with prep, planting, and management of the garden.
