About The Position

Apply to join the Haleakala National Park botany team for a botany placement. Individual placements work in the park plant nursery, propagate native plants, and control invasive plant species under the direction of National Park Service staff.

Requirements

  • Applicants be physically fit and able to work in challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Much of the work is done at an altitude of 6,000ft to 10,000ft.
  • This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority.
  • All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger.
  • Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Local candidates who: 1) live on island 2) possess previous knowledge of Native Hawaiian plants.

Responsibilities

  • Helping in the Park nursery
  • Propagating and transplanting native plants for restoration
  • Controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means
  • Hiking and camping in remote backcountry locations Monday through Friday
  • Monitoring native plant species in the field.

Benefits

  • $1,300 - one-time roundtrip travel allowance
