About The Position

The environmental educator will work with education staff to implement school- and community-based education programs, summer camps, and outreach events. Our programs are designed to foster a deeper scientific understanding of the bioregion and build personal connections with the natural world around us. This position will take the lead on some programming and assist in the design and delivery of other programs, providing the opportunity to gain experience in outdoor environmental and hands-on science education, as well as in outreach and public engagement activities.

Sit, stand, grasp, lift (up to 40 pounds unassisted), carry, walk, push, and pull for short and extended periods of time

Nice To Haves

Experience teaching in formal and informal settings to a variety of audiences and ages or a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a broad audience
Bachelor’s degree (degree in science, marine science, outdoor recreation, or similar preferred)
Experience working in a camp or outdoor setting
Willingness to work with scientific equipment
Basic outdoor skills
Current first aid and CPR certification, including child CPR, or willingness to obtain such certification

Responsibilities

Assist with, create, plan, and implement innovative environmental education activities and curricula for a variety of ages and venues, including but not limited to classroom settings, outdoor adventures, and community outreach.
Assist with the development, programming, logistics, and delivery of all summer camp activities.
Maintain program supplies and assist in the upkeep of education and shared spaces
Demonstrate a commitment to service in environmental conditions that will include: cold/heat, smoke, bugs, high winds, wildlife, and a lot of precipitation.
Be willing to learn how to use hand tools and power tools to accomplish service activities.
Be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member, which includes:
Be a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States;
Be at least 18 years or older;
Have a high school diploma or equivalent or actively working to obtain one;
Be willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks;
Ability to lift 40 lbs and walk/hike on uneven terrain, uphill or downhill, physical work for 8-10 hours per day
Ability to pass SCA’s background check
Assist with design and dissemination of other Science Center outreach and public engagement products, such as science news publications, radio programs, and distribution of information across an array of digital and social media platforms as needed.
Work with PWSSC research staff, when appropriate, to participate in educational activities.
Assist with the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) program by maintaining supplies, performing basic maintenance (with guidance – no experience needed), and helping to run ROV challenges in Cordova and in other locations around the state.
