About The Position

The Tax Analyst researches state and local laws to determine sales taxation of Costco’s members and merchandise. This research is the foundation for indirect tax-related warehouse, regional, and corporate procedures for the company and its affiliates and subsidiaries. The Tax Analyst manages various government tax audits conducted by states, counties, cities, and third-party consultants for sales, use, cigarette, fuel, and other miscellaneous tax types. The Tax Analyst ensures the accuracy of existing procedures through research of state regulations and updates various published and internal documents as needed. The Tax Analyst can manage any indirect tax related audit or research project. The successful candidate is very detail oriented, can manage multiple projects (some with deadlines), and enjoys working both independently and with a large and diverse team.

Requirements

  • Six or more years of experience independently managing large multi-state sales/use tax audits for company, affiliates and subsidiaries working in high stress situations. Includes being able to answer questions, research tax discrepancies, meet deadlines (established or self-imposed) and document findings.

  • Ability to timely research, interpret and apply multistate indirect tax laws and requirements, jurisdictional form requirements, identifying needs and/or difficult and complex problems and potential solutions. Includes being able to develop any needed compliance procedures and knowing when to refer to issues to upper management.
  • Ability to prepare or review tax related documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable guidelines
  • Ability to represent the Tax Department requirements in projects, to prioritize and meet deadlines internally and with external consultants and governmental agencies.
  • Ability to conduct ad hoc analysis of large data sets.
  • Ability to effectively train, provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to junior colleagues on managing jurisdictional audits, research and interpretation of tax laws and other areas of indirect tax. Includes quickly learning and developing training for new software and/or systems.
  • Ability to quickly learn and develop training of new software and/or systems for junior colleagues.
  • Ability to research and analyze any new or change in legislation and develop procedures as needed. Ability to address complex issues and problems.
  • Strong understanding of accounting concepts.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), and Google products (G-mail, Chrome) or equivalent software.
  • Possesses the ability to professionally and effectively communicate orally and in writing. Able to comprehend and effectively communicate written and numeric information accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to effectively manage time to complete projects, research, audits, etc.
  • Ability to perform job duties with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to act as a lead or first-level supervisor, as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Web Intelligence, BI Reporting or similar software and tax research services (e.g. RIA or CCH).ACL, Alteryx or other database analysis tool desirable.
  • Familiarity with Vertex (or similar software) desired.
  • Career-focused, motivated, and disciplined.
  • College degree with emphasis or major in Accounting preferred.
  • Indirect Tax educational courses or certifications (IPT, COST, STI) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Researches and comprehends multi-state tax laws (sales, use, transactions, miscellaneous). Documents and explains complex tax issues to state representatives, warehouses, other departments, and members.
  • Represents Costco before government tax auditors. Evaluates and prepares a wide variety of records from corporate departments and warehouses, as well as supporting conclusions through tax research. Represents the Tax Department’s interests in projects for company affiliates and subsidiaries. ● Develops procedures for tax reporting and exemption documentation.
  • Assists in maintaining the product tax system using Legacy, SAP, and Vertex software. Assists in the maintenance of tax information available on the Tax Department’s intranet site. ● Provides guidance and training to Tax Accountants assisting with audits and other projects. ● Responds to tax inquiries from other departments, members, and various agencies.
  • Manages multiple research projects.
