About The Position

Indirect Tax Accountant (P2) The indirect Tax Accountant is responsible for projects associated with the maintenance of indirect-tax activities as well as the preparation and/or review of assigned tax returns and related reports. As an individual contributor, the Indirect Tax Accountant prepares routine to moderately complex tax returns at Alaska Air Group (AAG). Indirect Senior Tax Accountant (P3) The indirect Senior Tax Accountant is an individual contributor to the Tax team and a subject matter expert who is responsible for projects associated with the maintenance of indirect-tax activities, as well as the preparation and/or review of assigned tax returns and related reports at Alaska Air Group (AAG). This role exercises considerable judgment in projects associated with the preparation and maintenance of indirect tax records.

Requirements

  • 2 years of relevant experience in finance and tax preparation.
  • A bachelor’s degree with a focus in accounting, tax, business-related field or an additional 2 years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, organized and able to work efficiently and accurately under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel (including pivot tables and v-lookups) and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in indirect tax return work paper and form preparation.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft Financials or other ERP systems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • 4 years of indirect tax experience in accounting or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in detailed maintenance and preparation and/or review of indirect tax returns, payments and records as assigned. This may include: Sales/Use/VAT tax preparation and/or review
  • Federal and local excise tax preparation and/or review
  • Property tax preparation and/or review
  • Fuel tax preparation and/or review
  • Analyze changes to the tax law to determine the impact to the company
  • Consult and collaborate with team members regarding tax questions
  • Assist with appeals, audits and litigation
  • Research and keep abreast of current tax laws, regulations and practices
  • Assist with preparation of tax budget.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure accounting practices are in compliance with company policies.
  • Contribute to special tax projects, economic analysis or other projects.
  • Mentor less experienced tax accountants and review work of colleagues.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in property, excise, VAT/GST, or sales/use taxes through detailed maintenance and preparation of indirect taxes. This may include:
  • Preparing state/local tax returns and/or review
  • Maintaining/Updating tax budget workpapers
  • Preparing federal excise tax returns and/or review
  • Preparing international VAT/GST returns and/or review
  • Preparing fuel tax returns and/or review
  • Consulting with internal and external personnel regarding tax questions and problems
  • Assisting with appeals, audits and litigation
  • Keeping abreast of current tax laws, regulations and practices
  • Make recommendations to supervisors based on analysis of changes to state and federal tax laws.
  • Guide, influence and coach others in tax process and filing positions.
  • Prepare and leads special tax projects, economic analysis and other projects.
  • Create indirect tax forecasts and projections, monthly journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure accounting practices are in compliance with company policies.
  • Review and prepares responses to tax controversies, ensuring timely responses are provided for information requests.
