About The Position

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire an Independent Living Skills Educator to provide highly specialized instruction for visually impaired students in subject areas related to Core and Expanded Core Curriculum, including activities of daily living, independent living skills, personal finance, cooking, nutrition, and assistive technology. The Independent Living Skills Educator conducts on-going evaluation of assigned students and prepares Individual Education Program (IEP) components for independent living and daily living skills with parents, local education agency representatives, school support staff and students. This position develops, evaluates and modifies sequential instructional curriculum for each student for daily living and independent living skills. The incumbent will prepare daily attendance reports and maintains and submits written reports of student progress. The Division is looking to hire a detail-oriented Educator with good communication and leadership skills to start the 2026 – 2027 school year.

Requirements

  • Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE-issued Professional Educator License with endorsement appropriate for Teacher of Students who are blind or visually impaired prekindergarten through age 22.
  • Requires proficiency in Braille when instructing students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Must meet Illinois School for the Visually Impaired health and safety requirements.
  • Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of professional experience working with media used for students who have visual impairments and blindness such as Braille and or other technologies.
  • One (1) year of professional experience utilizing current educational trends, techniques, and best practices.
  • One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.
  • One (1) year of professional experience using the tools, materials and equipment associated with required coursework.
  • One (1) year of professional experience maintaining patience and tolerance while working with students with a wide range of behaviors.
  • One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with staff, assigned students and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as Independent Living Skills Educator.
  • Conducts on-going evaluation of assigned students and prepares Individual Education Program (IEP) components for independent living and daily living skills with parents, local education agency representatives, school support staff and students.
  • Develops and continues to evaluate the sequential instructional curriculum for daily living skills and independent living skills.
  • Prepares daily attendance reports.
  • Monitors the care and use of equipment and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
