About The Position

We are seeking a patient, dependable, and supportive Independent Living Services (ILS) Instructor to provide afternoon services for an individual with Mild Intellectual Disability. This role focuses on building daily living skills, increasing confidence in community settings, and supporting independence with household management and healthcare appointments. The ideal candidate is calm, encouraging, and able to assist with planning, organization, and anxiety management in busy or stressful environments. Primary Goals of Support Support grocery shopping and safe transportation of items Develop cooking and meal preparation skills Improve cleaning and housekeeping routines Provide support during medical and healthcare appointments Key Responsibilities Grocery Shopping & Community Support Assist with grocery shopping and transporting items safely back to the home Support planning shopping lists and prioritizing essential items Provide guidance in navigating busy or crowded environments Offer reassurance and support when anxiety or sensory overwhelm occurs Cooking & Meal Preparation Support meal planning, including preparing enough food and planning for leftovers Assist with organizing cooking tasks and managing time effectively Provide guidance on basic nutrition and balanced meals Encourage safe and confident use of kitchen equipment Cleaning & Housekeeping Assist with establishing and maintaining a realistic cleaning routine Break cleaning tasks into manageable steps to prevent fatigue or overwhelm Encourage consistency and motivation while maintaining a respectful approach Medical Appointments Provide support during medical and healthcare appointments Assist with communication and self-advocacy with healthcare providers Help reduce anxiety before, during, and after appointments Encourage follow-through with future appointments despite past negative experiences Identified Challenges to Address Shopping Difficulties Carrying groceries independently can be challenging and may limit her ability to obtain all necessary items Overwhelm in Busy Environments Crowded spaces or rude and disrespectful interactions may cause anxiety or sensory overload, impacting focus and confidence Planning & Organization Limited experience with meal planning may make it difficult to prepare adequate portions or plan for leftovers Cooking & Time Management Difficulty organizing cooking tasks may result in delays or incomplete meals Limited nutritional knowledge may affect meal balance without guidance Cleaning & Housekeeping Lack of a consistent cleaning routine may lead to difficulty maintaining a clean living space Physical fatigue or feeling overwhelmed may reduce motivation and follow-through Healthcare Appointments Anxiety and difficulty communicating with medical providers may lead to feeling overwhelmed Negative interactions or mental health challenges may reduce motivation to attend future appointments Work Environment One-on-one support in the home and community Afternoon-only schedule Structured, supportive, and goal-oriented setting

Requirements

  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities preferred
  • Patient, respectful, and supportive communication style
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in stressful or busy environments
  • Two forms of valid identification
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Live Scan fingerprint clearance
  • Current TB test clearance
