About The Position

The Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA) at Cleveland Clinic plays a crucial role in supporting living donor candidates undergoing evaluation for organ donation. This part-time position operates independently from the transplant recipient's team, ensuring that the rights and needs of the living donor are prioritized throughout the evaluation process. The ILDA is responsible for advocating for the donor, documenting their informed consent, and facilitating communication between the donor and the transplant team, all while adhering to the guidelines set by the Organ Procurement Transplant Network (OPTN).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, healthcare, education, or ministry.
  • Five years of work experience in a related field with demonstrated social interaction and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to work in sensitive situations with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently from home, office, or hospital setting.
  • Flexibility to be on-call 24/7.

Responsibilities

  • Function independently from the transplant candidate's team.
  • Advocate for the rights of the living donor.
  • Fulfill qualification and training requirements regarding living organ donation and transplantation.
  • Review and document the living donor's receipt of information on informed consent, evaluation process, and surgical procedure follow-up requirements.
  • Assist the donor in obtaining additional information from other professionals as needed.
  • Document in the hospital electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Enhance communication between the living donor candidate and the interdisciplinary transplant team as needed.
  • Maintain education requirements for compliance with OPTN policy and procedure.
  • Serve as an advocate and reporter for living donor candidates who choose not to donate after evaluation.
  • Meet with living donor candidates as scheduled or ad hoc as needed.
