About The Position

Provides one on one assistance to children and adults with disabilities who are enrolled in various activities/programs at the Chicago Park District parks. The Inclusion Program is designed to accept children and adults of all abilities for recreation and leisure activities.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education or related field is preferred; or three years of experience working hands on/directly with children and/or adults with disabilities is required.
  • Knowledge of competitive sports programs for people with disabilities.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Ability to enforce safety rules.
  • Ability to lead physical, recreational and leisure activities.
  • Basic swimming skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in a college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education or related field is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists one or more children or adults in sports, games, and various recreational and athletic activities, based on the severity of their disability and/or level of need.
  • Evaluates the skill levels of children and adults and assesses their ability to safely and effectively participate in park activities.
  • Enforces and promotes safety guidelines during all recreational and athletic activities.
  • Provides assistance to children and adults during lunch and with necessary restroom functions, as needed.

Benefits

  • +$1.00/hour increase on 1/1/2026.
  • +$1.00/hour increase on 1/1/2027.
  • 1 day of personal leave at the commencement of each quarter, accrued on a pro rata basis.
  • 2 days of sick leave at the commencement of each quarter, accrued on a pro rata basis.
  • After one year of employment, employees who work 1,040 hours or more in the previous year are typically eligible for between 7-10 workdays of paid vacation time annually, and additional time after first 5 years of employment.
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave (upon meeting FMLA eligibility requirements).
