About The Position

The Railcar Inspector is responsible for inspection of railcar/railcar components and creating accurate repair estimates/billing/reports to facilitate maintenance and qualification of railcars/railcar components. The Railcar Inspector is also responsible to ensure inspection and maintenance is conducted in a safe and quality manner. The purpose of this position is to ensure the railcar is maintained and returns to service in compliance with owners', regulatory, and industry standards/specifications.

  • High school education or general education (GED) or 3 to 6 months job-related experience; or equivalent of education and experience.
  • Must successfully complete the following training and become certified within 90 days of hire or job transfer and on a three-year recurring basis:
  • Quality Assurance Program
  • Requires long periods of standing; walking, bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, and entering into confined spaces and elevated surfaces
  • The team member in this position is required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
  • Thorough understanding of the MSDS's, company safety policies / practices, and proper use of identified PPE which may involve protective clothing, sleeves, hard hats, foot protection, eye / ear protection, respirator use, etc.
  • With the exception of clerical, administrative, and some management positions, which require indoor work, the physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid and dusty conditions

  • A minimum of 5 years' inspection experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs thorough inspection of railcars/railcar components
  • Maintains current knowledge of government, industry (FRA & AAR), customer, and company policy, procedures, and work instructions
  • Inspects and ensures workmanship meets government, industry (FRA & AAR), customer, and company quality requirements
  • Inputs estimates for maintenance and qualification and alterations into computer estimate system
  • Proficient in the interpretation of drawings and specification, including weld and nondestructive testing symbols
  • Communicate effectively with internal customers
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by QA Manager
  • Other duties as assigned.
