The purpose of this job is to provide a safe, positive learning environment for students assigned to in school suspension. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One (1) year of successful experience working with students to change inappropriate behavior to positive behavior.
  • Ability to use good judgment in assessing situations and applying behavior management strategies that de-escalate inappropriate student behavior.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school administrators, staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to encourage and influence students to change inappropriate behaviors to achieve academic success.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree or four-year degree preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience working in urban schools preferred.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Responsibilities

  • Acts in a professional, respectful, and welcoming manner at all times.
  • Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to the school and other stakeholders.
  • Supports and promotes the school’s overall mission and vision.
  • Creates a structured, positive learning environment for students assigned to in-school suspension and provides supervision for students who are assigned to in-school suspension.
  • Obtains student assignments from the teacher and supervises the completion of the assignment. Returns completed student work to teacher as specified by the teacher and/or administration.
  • Offers assistance with assignments. For example: reviews directions, provides examples, etc.
  • Discusses the inappropriate behavior with the student and offers tools/suggestions to student to avoid problems in the future.
  • Performs other assignments if no in-school suspension monitoring is necessary. For example: serves as a substitute teacher or assists teachers or students in other classrooms.
  • Assists administrators and staff with safety throughout the school by monitoring students immediately before and after school, classroom, cafeteria, halls, and school grounds as needed.
  • NEVER uses corporal punishment to address inappropriate student behavior. Uses appropriate strategies to address inappropriate behavior in the in school suspension classroom and/or diffuses confrontations between students and others as necessary. Seeks assistance from administrators if unable to de-escalate disruptive, inappropriate student behavior. Seeks assistance from administrators if unable to de-escalate disruptive, inappropriate student behavior.
  • Follows school policies, district policies and state/federal laws pertaining to discipline of students.
  • Provides support to classrooms and the administration as directed by supervisor.
  • Communicates through the proper channels to keep supervisor and other appropriate personnel informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature.
  • Follows established procedures for ensuring assigned areas are safe.
  • Works collaboratively with administration, principals, secretaries, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Attends work and arrives to work on time.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.
  • Completes forms, reports, or other documentation and submits to the teacher, principal, or other designated person in the format directed by the administrator.
  • Schedules parent conferences and/or attends parent conferences if directed by an administrator.
  • Uses technology to maintain records and/or complete forms and reports if directed by an administrator.
  • Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, sending/receiving faxes, or filing documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
